Doctor Who Watch a Thon Season 5×5 “Flesh and Stone”

As an effort to justify our somewhat obsessive T.V watching Meghan (Of Coffee and Wizards and @MegTao on Twitter) and myself have decided to undertake a Doctor Who Watch-a-long. We’ll be starting with the beginning of the 2005 relaunch and will be posting about one episode every Wednesday on our respective blogs. We hope you’ll join in – whether as a re-watch or to discover the Doctor for the first time! (Season 1 and Episodes 1-4 of Season 2 can be found here)

*just a heads up each post may contain spoilers for that episode and then ones before it*

Episode Summary

flesh and stoneA continuation of The Time of Angels, Flesh and Stone finds The Doctor, Amy, Dr. Song and the remaining soldiers escaping from the crashed ship and into the forest. The Angels attempt to create a rift in time and space much as the Doctor had found in Amy’s room when they first met. Amy meanwhile is counting down from 10 minutes and the Doctor has determined that an Angel has taken over her mind.

Thoughts on the Episode

I love the way they build the mystery around River. Who is she? How does she play into all this? Clearly she’s intelligent – she can drive the TARDIS and she knows all this stuff that the Doctor doesn’t. And she’s dangerous, she’s being held prisoner and we learn that she’s killed a man. But how does she relate to the Doctor and what is finding out the truth about her going to do to him?

Also since I’m really not that into Amy, she’s a great companion for me to get invested in.

There’s a lot of weird stuff going on here time-wise and I am not even going to try and comment on it. Most of it seems incredibly impossible and doesn’t make sense but hey! It’s Doctor Who and it’s entertaining so who really cares? But I am glad we’re acknowledging that no one remembers the giant Cyberman in Victorian England. That always bugged me.

Maybe I wasn’t in the right frame of mind when I watched “Flesh and Stone”, but I didn’t find it quite as creepy as the other angel episodes. That is until Amy has to keep her eyes closed and walk through the forest. And then the angels are all around her and there’s the beeping sensor noise. All I could think of was that scene in Aliens when the dots on the scanner move closer and closer to them and you know at any second they’re going to die. That kind of suspense gets me every time.

I was kind of excited because for most of this episode I kind of liked Amy but then the end came and Amy tried to sleep with the Doctor. I am not cool with this at all. I get that her nerves are shot and she may have cold feet about her wedding but dude you are engaged. Cheating is not ok. Even if it is with the Doctor. Just no. I lost all the respect I had gained for her over the last 50 minutes.

Favourite Moment

The closing scene with River and the Doctor. They’re just so cute

River: You’ll see me again quite soon, when the Pandorica opens

Doctor: The Pandorica. That’s a fairy tale

River: Aren’t we all?

  1. yeahhhhhhhhhhh it was definitely a lapse in judgement on her part

  2. Yeah, I’m not feeling Amy, either. ESPECIALLY after that ending — she just wouldn’t give up and it really bothered me. AND I’m like you — I didn’t find this angel episode as scary as the other ones. To me, the very first one, Blink, was the BEST one and I think they’ve gone downhill from there. I think what I hate most is all the different faces the angels make now, when before they were so subtle. It was a different kind of scary and more effective.
