Spotlight Reads: February 2013

February 2013 will be delivering a whole mish mash of new books. Everything from fantasy, to steampunk boarding schools, adult dystopia and teens who can move objects with their minds. Plus a whole wealth of sequels (I know I’m not the only one counting down the days until Unravel Me!). What books are you looking forward to this month?

february 2013

City of a Thousand Dolls by Miriam Forster. February 5. Harper Teen

A fantastical city, a forbidden romance, a string of murders. City of a Thousand Dolls has everything I love in a novel. One of my 2013 must reads!

Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger. February 5. Little Brown Books

The start of a new steampunk boarding house series from the author of the Parasol Protectorate.

Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick. February 5. Roaring Book Press

This one only hit my radar and I’m not even 100% sure what it’s about but I know there’s vampires and interlocking stories and that Jenn from Almost Grown Up liked it, so that’s good enough for me!

Shadow on the Crown by Patricia Bracewell. February 7. Viking

I love stories about women in Medieval Times. Kings, crowns and some Vikings – I think this will be a great read for fans of Philippa Gregory.

Office of Mercy by Ariel Djanikian. February 21. Viking

I grew up reading novels like The Handmaid’s Tale and 1984 and while there is a whole wealth of dystopian novels in the YA market I have missed my adult literary versions, like the upcoming Office of Mercy.

The Different Girl by Gordon Dahlquist. February 21. Dutton.

A sci-fi adventure about four nearly identical girls on a desert island. That minimalistic yet striking cover gets me every time! Can’t wait to read it!

Between Two Thorns by Emma Newman. February 26. Angry Robot

Angry Robot/Strange Chemistry is quickly becoming one of my favourite publisher. Their speculative fiction is always unique and inventive and I think Between Two Thorns will be no exception!

Pulse by Patrick Carman. February 26. Katherine Tegen Books.

I loved Patrick Carman’s Dark Eden and though this book is futuristic it’s not dystopian! A tale of teens with telekinesis (try saying that three times fast) sounds right up my alley!

Teleportation Accident by Ned Beauman. February 26. Bloomsbury

This book has already been released in Canada but you’ll want to add it to your list either way. How could you resist a book with the tagline “history happened while you were hungover?”

Dreams and Shadows by C Robert Cargill. February 26. Harper Voyager

A last minute addition to my list, Dreams and Shadows is recommended for fans of Neil Gaiman, Lev Grossman and Erin Morgenstern!
